Sarjapur, or Sarjapura as it was known earlier, dates back to the 17th Century AD when the Mughal Emperor Aurangazeb offered a cluster of villages as a land grant to the Wodeyars. Sarjapura was then world-renowned for its fine muslin and silk cloth. But in the early 1800s, after the advent of the British, things took a nasty turn.
