Also known as Kolkata Metro Line No. 3 or the Kolkata Purple Metro Line, the 15.08-kilometre Joka-BBD Bagh Metro line was inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on 30 December 2022. Later, this Purple Metro Line was extended to Majerhat on 6 March 2024. It will connect Kolkata Metro Line 1 at Park Street in central Kolkata and run parallel up to Esplanade in central Kolkata, where it will also connect Kolkata Metro Line 2.

Earlier, the Joka metro station route was planned until B.B.D. Bagh, but later, the route was shortened to terminate at Esplanade. However, when the budget was sanctioned in the year 2012-13, the line was extended to  IIM and Diamond Park for 2 km, along with a separate metro station at Joka.
